NTPC-Kaniha with 3000 MW capacity is the second largest power plant in India. This plant is located in Angul District of Odisha state. The power plant is facing severe coal shortage. As per norms prescribed by the Central Electricity Authority, the plant should have a coal stock for at least one week. The plant currently has a coal stock of 30,000 tonne that would meet plant’s requirement for half a day.The shortage is caused due to low supply of coal from the feeding Mahanadi Coalfield Ltd (MCL). The Kaniha open cast mine is also proving to be not much of help to tide over the shortage situation due to frequent breakdown of machines resulting in low production. If this scenario continues then some of the units will have to be shut down.
