TIL has always introduced world class products and is firmly associated with India's infrastructure development. Considering India's hot mix asphalt pavements` making needs and challenges, TIL has introduced the latest technology from Astec Inc, the TIL-Astec double barrel hot mix asphalt pavement equipment with a capability of RAP @ 50 per cent. This equipment is built on the Astec design and indigenously manufactured in TIL's state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in West Bengal and distributed through TIL's pan-Indian network, says Somnath Bhattacharjee, President Material Handling Solutions and Equipment & Project Solutions Business, TIL. Excerpts from the interview.
Could you tell us the selection criteria for hot mixing plants?
The latest trend in hot mix technology is warm mix asphalt with the usage of RAP. WMA is called warm mix because it is a product that can be made with a temperature 28¦C lower than the temperature required for the more conventional hot mix. There are positive benefits related to WMA production, including such things as reduced consumption of energy, significantly lower emissions and elimination of visible smoke. But until Astec developed its double barrel green system, the WMA process required special additives, and that resulted in added costs.
The key point here is that the TIL-Astec Double Barrel Green System does not require the addition of any expensive commercial additives. Instead, the major component of the system is inexpensive and readily available water.
The choice of technology, capacity and capability of a hot mix asphalt plant is driven by the quality of pavement to be delivered against a contract, compliance to regulatory standards and emission regulations, total cost of ownership and cost of hot mix asphalt pavement per unit length, aftermarket support and reliability of the product to be able to complete the asphalt pavement work within the stipulated period.
Tell us about the range offered by TIL. What are the major challenges you face?
Currently, we offer a range of hot mix asphalt pavement equipment in India that includes 180 TPH and 270 TPH, both with warm mix technology and capable of using RAP up to 50 per cent. It is a unique offering; we are developing a new segment in India and driving the market development. This cutting edge technology and its advantages are extremely interesting for all users but any change process has to go through few fundamental steps of creating awareness, building reference, demonstrating the benefits and facilitating the transition. We have seeded few 180 TPH plants and each one of these plants have delivered more than 2 lakh tonne of output in just over a year's time, with high uptime.
