The hydraulics industry in India has slowly but steadily grown since it started in early sixties. It started with an objective of import substitution of some of the hydraulic products being used by the industry in various applications. Although the industry has shown a reasonable growth over the years, it still has a long way to go in terms of energy efficiency and technology adoptions. In the past few years, many international brands have set up shops in India and also, many Indian companies have tied up with foreign players to cater to the growing demand from various user segments here. These international companies have brought in modern production technologies and solutions to the Indian market.
Major players are getting ready to meet the emission norms, which are getting more and more stringent, in Indian market as well. Major companies in hydraulics are focusing more on new technologies. Modulated fan drives which significantly contribute to reduce the emissions in engines, NHV technology to fully optimise noise and vibration reduction in any hydraulic system, etc are few of the new initiatives in this direction.
OEM customers are now focusing on better power density, energy efficiency, accuracy and quicker responses. Electro-hydraulics, though not popular in India as of now, will help in achieve overall energy efficiency and meet the stringent emission norms of the export market as well as the domestic market.
The slowdown in construction, mining and infrastructure markets has also affected the hydraulics industry in the last few years. However, with infrastructure and construction sectors showing signs of recovery, the hydraulics market is looking forward to be on a growth path in the coming years. The Central Government´s various initiatives and the Prime Minister´s vision on ¨Make in India¨ can really push the growth of hydraulics industry. This will also attract many leading global players to India through manufacturing roots. Many OEMs have started sourcing hydraulic systems from suppliers in India who are reputed international brands. This will encourage more such players to start manufacturing, supply and service activities here.
