Kirloskar Pneumatic Company (KPCL), the Rs 527- crore transmission and compressor maker part of the Kirloskar group, expects to roll out its first road railer rake by the end of this fiscal. The company has signed an agreement with the Indian Railways in March for the manufacture and deployment of a rake, comprising 50 bogies, on the Delhi-Chennai route, according to Aditya Kowshik, Managing Director, KPCL. On road, the road railer is a regular trailer attached to a tractor which then backs onto a four-wheeled bogie to become a rail unit. The wheels of the trailer retract on the railway line. The services company will run the service and is expected to pay the railways for the use of their lines while KPCL will manufacture under licence from the US-based Wabash Corporation. The road railer concept is popular in countries with a vast land mass and a rail network, both of which fit India.
