With a fleet of more than 80 Cat machines, Gammon banks on Caterpillar for smooth sailing, peak performance levels and timely completion of its infrastructure projects.High performance and reliability have forged strong ties between Cat® machines and Gammon India. Having been in the construction business for 99 years, Gammon India has a discerning eye for partnering with the best, to retain its position as a leader in its field. With the purchase of more than 80 Cat machines including motor graders, hydraulic excavators, soil compactors, track type tractors, asphalt compactors and wheel loaders, Gammon places implicit trust in Caterpillar's commitment to manufacturing machines having high performance levels and reliability.Currently working on project 8828, an annuity project under National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Gammon India is upgrading a 64-km stretch of road on the existing NH-77 between Hajipur and Muzaffarpur to four-lane dual carriageway configuration, Gammon has deployed 12K Cat graders, six soil compactors, four Cat 320D excavators, one dozer and five loaders."We are doing substantial work and achieving good progress due to Cat machines. Performance-wise too, we are quite satisfied and are confident of completing the project in time," said Jaydeep Chakraborty, Deputy General Manager - Plant Department, Gammon India. "For instance, the Cat motor grader with a blade length of 14 ft is doing an exceptionally good job. Fuel efficiency is greater and the machine is easy to operate. Output too, is better because of its excellent performance," said Chakraborty. "Cat soil compactors provide high-quality compaction with five per cent deep point compaction, which is a very good achievement," Chakraborty added. The smooth drum CS533E vibratory soil compactor, used to compact granular and semi-cohesive soils and the option of padfoot drum CP533E, primarily used to compact cohesive soils, provide excellent machine performance with good operator visibility and comfort. The machines are easy to service, and increase machine commonality across the Cat vibratory soil compactor product line. The Cat 320D is a 20.4-21.5 tonne excavator that is well suited for construction applications such as utility works, urban construction, demolition, water and sewage works. With a wide range of hydraulic configuration options and work tools, it stands as one of the most versatile machines in the market. The 320D is equipped with flexible fuel modes allowing the operator to either maximise output or reduce fuel consumption in economy mode by approximately 15 per cent."Low lifecycle cost with high-quality performance makes Caterpillar one of the market leaders in this particular sector. Cat 320D is a versatile excavator being used for multiple tasks in burrow area, quarry work, etc," said Chakraborty. "We are especially satisfied by the performance of the Cat dozer. The blade is excellent for doing embankment work," he added."Before using the dozer for long breaking, we were using a motor grader to push the initial heaps of soil. With the introduction of the dozer, work output has accelerated. It breaks the heaps, makes the initial layer and then we go in for grading with the motor grader," said Chakraborty.Prior to buying any equipment, large companies like Gammon carry out techno-commercial evaluation, considering the performance of machine, fuel efficiency, service availability, etc."We carry out a complete analysis on the plant and equipment component as well as return on investment before buying an equipment. Cat equipment works best due to its superior output and performance. Low fuel consumption makes these machines extremely cost-effective," said Chakraborty. "Cat machines are the heart of our project, contributing to the speedy progress of our project. Since a variety of Cat equipment is deployed, we have a requirement of after-sales service, which is adequately met by Caterpillar's and TIPL's excellent after sales support," he added.Successful operation and careful handling of machine is of prime importance to avoid accidents, damage and low performance standards. Caterpillar under-stands the prime importance of training operators for optimal output of machines.Chakraborty said, "Caterpillar provides excellent training to our operators. The Caterpillar team was on site for four days and gave extensive training including classroom and field training. Our operators have benefited a lot from it."India's spending on infrastructure development is expected to grow to $100 billion per year by 2012 and road building is expected to be a major beneficiary of this as 46 per cent of the 2010-11 Budget is already allocated for roads infrastructure. With a fleet of more than 80 Cat machines, Gammon banks on Caterpillar for smooth sailing, peak performance levels and timely completion of its infrastructure projects.
