Badrinath Kandkur of Dolphin International credits Volvo for the outstanding quality and reliability of its equipment backed by professional yet, very personalised service.Till the other day, Ilkal was an obscure little town nestling in a valley in the southeast corner of Bagalkot district in north Karnataka. Then sometime in 1983, an incredibly wonderful thing happened: the world-famous Ilkal granite was discovered. Life has never been the same for this little town ever since.“Well, they say the granite was first discovered by one Aiyaz some 2,000 years ago. Only no one believed him then,” says Badrinath Kandkur, Managing Partner of Dolphin International. “Good thing they didn’t. Or we wouldn’t have been of much use, you know.”Kings of the quarryA long-standing user of Volvo equipment, Dolphin International has grown from strength to strength over the years. Today, its business sprawls across four large quarries spread over 60 acres. The company is highly respected, both within the country and abroad, as a top-line granite producer. Badrinath believes it is uncompromising quality and dedicated teamwork that have made this great success possible. He also credits Volvo for the outstanding quality and reliability of its equipment backed by professional and yet, very personalised service. “Quite frankly, I sometimes wonder if we could have ever made it this far without Volvo,” he muses.Dolphin International purchased its first Volvo equipment way back in 2004. Now it owns seven, including an EC480 DL excavator and L220F wheel loader. The fleet also includes three EC240s and two EC290s. Incidentally, Dolphin International was the first customer of EC480 series excavators in India. Says Badrinath, “Our requirement was to extract granite blocks weighing up to 55 tonnes. The EC480 makes it look like child’s play. You should see the way the monster hauls up those heavyweights!”Growing the business valueProductivity has shot up by at least 25 per cent with the EC480 in play. With fuel consumption at just over 30 litres per hour, it’s clear “You see, that’s the thing with Volvo Equipment. Not only do you save on fuel consumption, you boost your productivity too,” says Badrinath, as he watches the EC480 haul a massive granite boulder across. “And when you consider efficiency and service aspects and the very user-friendly features it becomes clear why having a Volvo or two makes perfect sense for our business.”Currently, Dolphin International supplies pink granites to China, Taiwan and parts of Europe. The order books are overflowing and yet, the company is able to honour its sales contracts well on time. Each and every Volvo at Dolphin International is hard at work at the quarries helping the company meet the tough deadlines, day after day after day, without sweat. Badrinath sums it up with a wry smile, “Getting big orders is the easy part. It’s when you get down delivering the granite, that you realise the real value of a Volvo.”He should know better than anyone else in the business.
