It seems the mining scenario in India is gradually improving. For the past many years, mining in India had been suffering from many adverse situations: scams and illegal mining, bans due to public ire against impact on environment and so on. The growth is visible in coal, iron ore and other metals like zinc and copper. According to an ICRA report, the overall domestic coal production is expected to reach 737 million tonne (mt) in FY2019 against 676 mt in FY2018, growing by around 9 per cent YoY. The reforms in mining policy introduced by the Union Government in the last few years have been a progressive step towards improved mining efficiency and better mineral output. The latest policy initiative of allowing private players in commercial coal mining is expected to boost the coal mining segment over a period. Mining equipment manufacturers are also looking at the growing mining market in India with great interest. Coal India is planning to acquire new mining machinery worth Rs 120-130 billion over the next three years. Global and Indian mining equipment manufacturers are going to benefit from this equipment acquisition plan by Coal India. Trenchless technology is essentially used to develop, maintain, or manage subsurface infrastructure without excavating continuous trenches. In urban areas, due to burgeoning service demands and ever shrinking working spaces, the technology is gaining significance in the overall infrastructure development and management activities. Trenchless technology on account of several benefit, is becoming the preferred choice in many projects. Dr Niranjan Swarup, Director General, Indian Society for Trenchless Technology, is writing more on the importance of this method in the new era of construction. Read the Focus to know more on the trenchless technology trends.
